The First Born program provides mothers, fathers, and primary care providers with education and support to encourage normal growth and development of happy, healthy babies in positive, nurturing families.

Service Eligibility – First Born is a home visitation program designed to meet the needs of New Mexican families. All services are free and offered to all women pregnant for the first time and first-time families within Socorro County. Services may begin at any time during the pregnancy or until the baby is 2 months old and continue until the child is three years old or until the family no longer requests services.

Services Provided- Home visits are designed to increase knowledge, skills, and insights into the parenting process while guiding families through the child’s first three years. In addition, a nurse postpartum home visit is offered to all first-time families who deliver or adopt babies.

Physical and emotional changes during pregnancy

Expectations of childbirth

Encouraging infant growth and development

Nurturing positive relationships

Breastfeeding

Creating safe and stimulating environments

Selecting toys and books that teach

Discovering community resources

Working towards solutions for family challenges

Opportunities for continuing education and on-going learning

Bilingual Perinatal Case Management

Who:
Pregnant women who reside in Socorro County who are financially ineligible for any prenatal medical assistance, as well as resources for any pregnant women desiring more information / referral

What:
Bilingual Perinatal Case Management pregnancy, Family promoting education and encouragement, bilingual educational sessions, information and referrals. Help families navigate the system to assure a healthy mom and baby, as well as month by month education through pregnancy, Ages and Stages to 36 months for child.

When:
Prepregnancy, early first trimester through 36 months for child/family unit.

Where:
Home and office visitations.


Child Safety Seats and Education

Who:
Any mom in need of a child safety seat who reside in Socorro County.

What:
Educate families in the proper use of child safety seats, and low cost seats, inspection of child safety seat.

Where:
Socorro General Hospital Healthy Family Initiative 107 Faulkner Street.

When:
Monthly in Socorro, classes start at 10:00 a.m.; Quarterly in Alamo, and Veguita
